The Santa Fe and North volleyball teams both competed in the Union Varsity Tournament this weekend at Tulsa Union High School. The Lady Wolves won the tournament, after they outscored opponents by 27 points over the course of the tournament. Edmond North finished third. In the first day of the tournament, The Lady Wolves defeated both Sand Springs and the hosting Tulsa Union in straight sets by a combined score of 150-97. The only time one of the two opposing squads broke 20 points in a set came in the second set of Santa Fe’s victory over Tulsa Union, when the Lady Wolves dropped Union 25-21. Santa Fe had another chance at a straight-set win against Bishop Kelley during their final match on Friday, as they beat the Lady Comets 25-17 and 25-20 to take an early, 2-0 lead. Bishop Kelley ran it back; however, claiming sets four and five to tie the contest at two-all. The Lady Comets’ reverse-sweep was stopped short after Santa Fe took the match win in a closely-contested 16-14 final set. Edmond North had just as successful of a first day as Santa Fe, and the two teams met each other in day two’s semifinal match. Santa Fe won the Mini-Edlam pairing in straight sets: 25-21, 25-19 and 25-21. Santa Fe’s victory scheduled them against Norman North for the championship in a match that the Lady Wolves would win in four sets. The Lady Wolves were only forced into three extra sets in their five tournament matches as they won 15 of their 18 frames this past weekend. Their dominating performance ensured that Rylen Moore, Rorianna Chartier and Kaeli Robinson were all named to the All-Tournament team. Robinson was voted Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Robinson, a junior, earned her MVP after having an 86 attack percentage. Moore etched 106 digs, and Chartier recorded 9 aces and 78 digs during the weekend’s tournament play. Santa Fe’s Anastassiya Barakhoyeva also record 9 aces. North’s Izzy Harwell and Kamryn Baccus were also selected to the All-Tournament team. The strong performance from the two Edmond teams looks even better once given consideration of the level of opponents they faced. “I’m very proud of our girls, they played very hard all weekend long,” said Will Ethridge, Santa Fe head coach. “They refused to lose in a very tough tournament that included five top-10 teams in 6A, and two top-10 teams in 5A.” Santa Fe’s next matchup will be hosted by the Stillwater Lady Pioneers on Tuesday; Edmond North will host Mustang at the same time.
