EDMOND — Union walked off the field Thursday satisfied with the district-opening, 26-point victory against Edmond North. Coach Kirk Fridrich was pleased to ride home with the district victory points from the first long-distance road game of the season. The Huskies couldn’t do much to slow down Union, which didn’t punt until almost halfway through the fourth quarter. The Redskins put together five efficient scoring drives in that span but also turned over the ball five times — fumbling four times and throwing one interception in the 35-9 win. Expectations are high for Union, which cracked the USA Today nationwide top 25 last week and is currently ranked No. 1 in Class 6AI. But self-inflicted wounds left the Union sideline frustrated even in victory. “We pressed a little too much,” Fridrich said. “Our expectations are so high that our kids are trying to do more than what they’re supposed to. We need to settle down and work within the game and work within our own teammates. I think you’ll see that cleaned up.” Union (4-0), which has won 10 consecutive games overall and 13 in a row against Edmond North dating back to 2000, struggled to maintain any rhythm offensively — stopping only itself with light-contact fumbles and one bad throw. Edmond North (1-3) recorded only one first down combined following Union’s five turnovers, and that one first down was followed quickly by a turnover on downs inside the red zone for the Huskies. “We just come out and do our job,” said Union senior defensive tackle Kenya Walker, who had three sacks and a fumble recovery. “We just come out and play our game. That’s all it is. … We just come out and play our game.” Receiver CJ Moore and running back Darius Boone each scored two touchdowns as Union built a 25-point halftime lead. After Edmond North kicked a field goal on its opening possession, the Huskies recorded just five first downs over their next six drives before halftime and only 39 yards. “The things that are most important, we were able to do,” Fridrich said. “You come out of the game healthy but definitely a lot to work on and a lot to point to. The positive thing is you get the win and you get to go back and see where all those mistakes are.”
