Four Huskies place top-10 at KC Stampede

Edmond North Wrestling placed tenth as a team during the 41-squad Kansas City Stampede this Friday and Saturday behind four top-10 individual finishes from Husky wrestlers. Kruz Simons took second-overall at 152 pounds, and Noah Hooks, Jake McCoy, and Blake Minnick placed in the single-digits over the weekend to grab a combined 189 of the Husky’s 262 tournament points. Simons recorded pins in the second, fourth and fifth rounds of the Stampede, and claimed four other decision wins before falling in the first-place match to Mill Valley’s Jarret Bendure 8-6. The two-point loss soured Simons’ stunning Stampede, but not before he netted 67 team points for his two-day record of seven wins and one loss. Hooks, McCoy and Minnick made sure that a Husky finisher reached the top-10 in the consecutive 182, 195 and 220 brackets. McCoy won four matches in the same class that saw a runner-up finish two weeks ago. Minnick went 5-2 with three decision wins, and Hooks fell two on his four-win weekend. Hook’s two falls came after his first match-loss of the year when Platte County’s Dakota Schmidt bested him in a second-round major decision. Hooks then rattled off two pins against Stephen Bonin and Bryce Westmoreland. Both of Hook’s fall-wins came under 32 seconds of match time, and the senior combined the two quick victories with a 9-0 major decision win in the first round of the championship bracket to finish fourth-overall.
