North girls have victory stolen at Edmond North

EDMOND — The game tied, the unbeaten Norman North girls had the ball out of bounds with about half a minute remaining. They could win it or go to overtime, it appeared. North girls coach Rory Hamilton put the ball in the hands of Jacie Evans, who had already scored 21 points. As she began to move forward rom near half court on the right side, setting up a final shot, the North bench began counting down the clock. “Nine, eight, seven,” her teammates chanted. Just before they got to “five,” Edmond North’s Kamri Heath reached in with her right hand and poked the ball across Evans’ body into her left and took off down the court ahead of a chasing Evans. Heath’s layup beat the buzzer and the Huskies, by a 50-48 count, handed the Timberwolves their first loss of the season. It was right that it came down to those two players. Evans’ was easily North’s best player Friday and Heath was Edmond North’s, finishing with 18 points. A battle of top 10 programs, the Class 6A coaches had North ranked No. 4 and Edmond North No. 7 entering the contest. North didn’t score a point until 90 seconds remained in the first quarter and did not take its first lead until Emma Base hit a top-of-the-key 3-pointer that put the T-Wolves on top 30-29 in the middle of the third quarter. The T-Wolves also led 35-34 in the third quarter and 48-46 in the fourth, never going away but never able to arrest control of the game, either. Evans’ sister, Jessika added 14 points and five rebounds. Base finished with seven points and seven rebounds.
