Sandites get past Edmond North, 34-31

SHAWNEE -- It’s not always about earning bonus points. Sometimes it’s about keeping your opponent from earning bonus points, and that’s exactly what Sand Springs did on day one of dual state. Class 6A No. 5 Sand Springs upset No. 4 Edmond North, 34-31, in the first round of the Class 6A Dual State Tournament Friday, Feb. 8 at Firelake Arena in Shawnee, Okla. “We wrestled really well,” said head coach Jarrod Patterson. “For the most part, all of our guys wrestled well. The ones that won worked to pick up bonus points, and the ones that lost worked to save us points.” The Edmond North Huskies recorded one more pin than Sand Springs with four, and the Sandites’ had three thanks to Brendon Wiseley (113), Seth Jones (126), and Chris Kirby (170). They also got bonus points from several major decisions. The dual started at 195 pounds, and Kaden Glass squeaked by Edmond North’s Christian Canty, 7-6. Trailing 3-0 early, the Huskies took a 4-3 lead when Jake McCoy got a 10-0 major decision over Brooks Dudley at 220 pounds. Josh Fincannon (285), Christian Forbes (106) and Wiseley all won their matches for the 15-4 Sandite lead, but Husky Nate Becker pinned Riley Weir, pulling Edmond North within five points, 15-10. The Jones brothers, Seth and Blake, got the next two wins for the 24-10 lead, but Edmond North would not go away, outscoring Sand Springs, 16-4, in the next four weight classes. The Huskies pulled within three points, 28-25, but Kirby pinned Braden Bowman at the 2:12 mark, giving his team much-needed bonus points and the 34-25 advantage with one match left. With a nine-point lead, Sand Springs gave up a pin in the final match, winning, 34-31. Sand Springs should have won, 35-31, but a team point was taken away for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Sandites will face No. 2 Choctaw in the semifinals Saturday.
